The Basics of Internet Marketing

By Darren Self

This article will be having a look into 3 basic elements an affiliate marketer should have in order to rapidly improve success.

The first is a website. This is very easy to set up but provides you with some real estate on the web. Spend some energy making it look professional and at least to a good standard. If you are recommending a product as a consumer who purchased and was very happy, then you may want to keep it more personal like a blog. Try to make it user friendly and be careful of stuffing it with too much information and too many links. You want to make it clear what the person should do whether it is signing up for your list or clicking a link for the sales page.

There are two basic approaches you should take when setting up the site. The first is to build a review page which looks at the benefits and weaknesses of a few products in the market. Make these as honest as possible and choose the best performing product as your number one selection. The second approach is to softly sell the product from the point of view of a consumer who had a good experience with it. When the visitor clicks onto the product page they will have warmed to it from the beginning.

The second element to think about is incentives. There is a great deal of competition on the internet and in order to stand out you need to provide more value than the other affiliates. There are a number of ways to do this and it is important to track and test each one. One option is a free incentive if somebody purchases through your affiliate link. Offer an e-book or audio series that will enhance the product in some way. The second is to get visitors to sign up to your email newsletter where you can gradually sell them on the product over time.

The third element is traffic. If you cannot get visitors to your site then you will not make any sales. There are a number of options available to you and each has their merits. Paid traffic can be effective but you have to test to see if it is profitable or it can get out of hand. Set up a pay-per-click campaign and send visitors by building an effective advertisement. As long as you are not paying too much per click and the traffic converts, you will have a success on your hands. Also you should try search engine traffic. To do this you will need to get a number of links from other sites so you rise in the rankings. You can achieve this with article marketing, link exchanges, web 2.0 sites and forums. This is more work but the traffic is free.

These three elements are just the beginning but if you can master these then the rest should come very easily to you.
