One of the biggest mistakes that people make when starting an online business is that they want to study everything. They want to know everything before they start their online business. Back in the 90s there were no experts. So I just did the best I could do with what I had. I used the browsers html composer.

As I was learning html code, I would view the source of something that I wanted to learn. Then I'd paste into notepad and examine it. I would make minor changes and that is how I learned to bold text. I think the best thing that someone can do is just make changes as you go. When you read an ebook, make the application right there on the spot as you go. Use that as your guide.

You don't make money just reading the how to ebook; the money comes from the application. So study the material and make the application right away, otherwise you won't go anywhere. Most people get bogged down with emails and ebooks and they never go anywhere because they are not using the knowledge that they are learning.

Figure out what you want to do, study that information then go out and do it. Don't get wrapped up in trying to do everything just perfect. It is ok to make mistakes and learn from them.

I left one of my mistakes up on my blog and I still laugh at it every time I see it. If you have a profitable business online, you're never going to really finish it. It's a work in progress. You can't expect to get everything right the first time you do it online either. The most important things you can do are to register that domain name, put a blog on it and get started with doing something.

I see this mistake time and time again. It's one of those things that you can say time after time. The best thing is when someone reads something; they say yes to it and get started with some kind of project.

I have been working online for about 13 years now. Looking back on my career the most powerful impact that I had was when I said and actually did something.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get someone that you can be accountable to. The person needs to get the importance of internet marketing, even if they are a newbie. Try and find someone that is on your level. This way you can share ideas and feedback because they get it. I was working solo for a very long time before I met others that I could click with.

If you don't have someone that you're accountable to, you'll go nuts and second guess yourself. I got more things done connecting with someone. Those are just a few things I think are important when starting your online business.

6 Very Common SEO Blunders

Generally I get contacted by site owners after their site is finished and already published to the web. The owner seeks out my advice after the site has been live for a while and still has no sales and/or traffic. I have put together a list of the most common problems I see when evaluating sites.

1. One of the most common mistakes I see is duplicate title tags. (The title tag is what appears at the top of the browser when the page is displayed and is what the search engines display for the first line of the site link in their results.) In other words most, if not all, of the site's pages have the same title tag. Usually it is the name of the business. Search engines place a lot of emphasis on title tags. When multiple pages have the same title tag, the search engines discount those pages' importance.

It is extremely important to title the page with the keyword phrase the page is optimized for. It is best if the keyword only is listed in the title. If that is not possible, at least the keyword should be first. For example: "Small Dog Collars" or "Small Dog Collars - YourSite.com"

2. Although meta tags are given little importance nowadays by the larger search engines, it is possible to misuse them and actually hurt the site. The biggest mistake I see with meta tags is for the meta description to be the same for every page. Pages with duplicate meta descriptions will suffer greatly in the rankings. The same goes for the meta keywords tag. The keyword tag must contain ONLY those keywords found on that page. Also, it is important not to put the same word in the meta tag descriptions more than 3 times. Don't make a list of meta keywords like this: large collars, red collars, small collars, leather collars, nylon collars. Search engines could see this as stuffing keywords. Search engines consider this spamming. It is much better to omit meta tags altogether than to misuse them.

3. Internal linking is often a real problem. Too many links can cause the search engine spider to quit indexing the site before it is actually finished. Google states that a site should have no more than 100 links on a page. I suggest no more than 50. And that is still a LOT of links!

For SEO purposes, the links should always be made with text. Many designers create images for their linking. This is very counter productive for optimization purposes. And along these lines, the navigation system should never be in any form of java script, Flash, or image map. A link with anchor text "leather dog collars" which points to a page optimized for "leather dog collars" is the best method of linking for SEO purposes.

However, do not end up stuffing keywords by having too many links on the same page with the same word or words. For example, don't have half of a page's links like this: large collars, leather collars, small collars, etc. Instead, have "collars" for the heading of the group and then have the links "large", "leather", "small", etc. below. This is not perfectly optimized, but it is better to be cautious than to risk being seen as stuffing keywords by the search engines.

And lastly, it is important that every page on your site has multiple links to it. Pages which have only one incoming link will not be ranked well. They may even be placed into Google's supplemental index. It can be difficult to work a page out of the supplemental index once it is in there.

4. Links to other sites are often a problem too. The days of linking to your friend's hobby site are over. Spamming has become such a problem that the search engines have really changed their algorithms with respect to linking. A dog site simply cannot have links to a totally unrelated site such as a pottery site. I am not saying one single link to a non-related page will get your site banned, but just be aware this can be a problem.

To make it a little easier to tell your friend you can't link to his site, inform your friend that a link from your dog site to their pottery site will do their pottery sight no good whatsoever. Although incoming links are extremely important to a site, the incoming links MUST come from sites with a similar theme. It is great for your dog page to get a link from dog training, dog breeding, dog nutrition, and dog house sites. A link on a computer website to your dog site won't benefit your site at all.

Many new site owners may also fall prey to scams which promise "thousands" of incoming links for $29.99. There is a good chance these scammers will use what are called link farms. The search engines consider link farms to be spam. Always remember, there is no free lunch!

5. Another scam which new site owners often waste money on is paying money for submissions to "hundreds" of search engines. There is simply no purpose in submitting to even dozens of search engines. When I create a new site, I simply submit the site to the group of directories I have listed on my site. Within weeks, sometimes days, my new site will be indexed by the top search engines. I never even bother submitting directly to any search engines... not even Google or Yahoo. It doesn't hurt to submit to them, but it works just as well to get links with the directories and by posting some articles with your site's link to article directories.

Additionally, offers of "Guaranteed Inclusion" in search engines are complete scams. Anyone can get a site included in all the top search engines. But getting listed on their first or second pages is going to cost you more than $29.99. It is going to require work!

There are two ways to get great listings in the search engines. One way is to learn basic SEO skills, do the work yourself, keep learning about SEO, and keep tweaking your site as it works its way higher and higher in the search engines. The other way is to spend enough money to hire a professional Search Engine Marketer. For a small site, be prepared to spend $500 or more.

There really is no in between. Do the work yourself or pay a professional. Any money spend in between will generally be wasted.

Surprise your customer by delivering their product faster than advertised. As an example, if you advertise that the customer will receive the product within ten business days, make sure they receive it well within five business days. This will create an incredible amount of goodwill with the customer and they will be more apt to purchase from you in the future.

A complaining customer is an opportunity, if you wish to go that extra mile. Attend to him with a smile on your face. Solve his problems at the earliest possible. Thank him for bringing the complaint to you.

This converts an unsatisfied customer into a person who has faith in you. His word of mouth praise may bring in many potential customers.

Article writing has become part of my daily process for building my business. When I first started think about using article writing and marketing as part of my business model, I thought that each article was submitted to an editor, like I used to do long ago. On the internet it is a very different process.

Back when I was trying to get my articles published in magazines and journals, I had to follow strict guidelines as to what the topic would be, how many words it could be, and when the issue would appear. Even though the article directories have rules about the minimum word count and the quality of the writing, there is no deadline to meet or editor to tell you that what you wrote was not exactly what they were looking for that month.

I keep my articles very short and straightforward, and teach one thing in each of them. I want my readers to go away with another piece of information that will help them in their quest to build an online business.

The reading level is something else I take into consideration. Most of us just don't have the time or desire to read long, difficult passages that require us to think like an academic. Instead, we want to read articles that can be quickly consumed while teaching us something at the same time.

I keep the reading level at about the ninth or tenth grade, and this works very well. My goal is to get the reader to visit my website or blog to get even more information on how to get started online.

Keep your articles simple. Make the point you want to teach, give some examples, and then come to the end. You notice I did not say to end the article. Your writing ends when someone has clicked on the link in the resource box and visited the site you have sent them to.

If you end the article there is absolutely no reason for someone to click on the link, because you have answered their questions completely and thoroughly. You want to make them hungry for the rest of the information, so a soft ending is best.

I usually just check my word count and then finish that sentence. If my articles appear unfinished, it is because they are. I encourage you to do the same thing and invite readers to your site to find out more of what they are looking for.

How To Choose The Right Domain Name For Your Website

How do you choose the right domain name for your website? Choosing the right web address is very important. There are a few reasons why.

The first reason it's important to choose the right web address (domain name) is because it needs to match your company (or whatever your website is for). Let's suppose your company name is Sherry's Flowers. The natural choice for a domain name would be sherrysflowers.com (assuming that name is not already taken).

So what do you do if the domain name you want is already taken? There are two primary alternatives. The first is to choose a different domain extension like .net. For the above example, that would mean selecting sherrysflowers.net. This presents a serious danger, though. Let's suppose you choose the .net address and advertise it. Your customers may forget and still go to the .com address which may bring about confusion, or worse, award sales intended to go to you, to your competition instead!

The other (and probably better) alternative is to come up with a totally different domain name altogether, something catchy that does not even necessarily even use your company name in it. For example, you could do something catchy like iloveflowers.com. This is sweet and easy to remember. And it prevents the issues of confusion with your competitor (in the aforementioned case where your company name is already taken by someone else, as a dot com address).

Another reason choosing the right address is important is because it needs to be easy to remember. If you want word-of-mouth to work well for you, you need your domain name to be something that can be easily shared verbally, even without the need for pen and paper.

You want John Doe (someone’s name, as an example) to be able to say to his coworker, “Yeah, I got great flowers for Jane from Sherry's Flowers; you can get some for your special girl at iloveflowers.com.” Something even slightly more complicated than that (such as getflowers4someone.com) might not only prevent John's coworker from retaining the address, but it may also keep John himself from remembering what the domain was in the first place!

The last but definitely not least important reason to choose the right domain name is so that people can easily type it when they are ready. If you choose a domain name that has too many numbers or strange or complex wording, they simply won't be able to type it correctly. This will prevent a great deal of traffic from reaching your site.

In summary, make sure you choose a domain name that: (1) reflects what you do (and uses your company or website's name, if possible), (2) doesn't confuse you to your potential visitors with your competition, and (3) is easy to remember and type.

Is internet marketing really about the numbers or is it about people? In reality it is about both. Many internet marketers get so caught up in the numbers that they forget the people aspect. If you come right down to it though, internet marketing is about making sales. If there are no people, there are no sales! Those numbers ARE people, and it pays to keep that in mind.

Once we get going in internet marketing, those numbers really start to matter. Our first big number we come across of course is number of sales, and that number one always feels so sweet (send out a kind thought to the person who was number one).

From then on our world seems full of numbers: numbers of keywords, numbers of ad campaigns, ctr percentages, number of landing pages, number of visitors, number of e-mails sent, and on and on it goes, not forgetting of course everyone's favorite – dollars in profit. Yes, we spend a good deal of our internet marketing time in number tracking.

What people really mean by a numbers game is that the more traffic you get to your site or product, the more sales you are going to make. Very simple, very straightforward, and that is what we build our internet marketing business around, whatever the methods we use to drive that traffic. When it comes to getting traffic, that is where we need to start thinking about people.

Good sales copy writers know people; they know how to push their buttons. Sales copy stems in turn from years of research in psychology, (usually not personal research from the writers though), to find out just what people do respond to. Are we conning these people?

That depends how you want to look at it, and some would say yes, we are deliberately; if only temporarily, brain-washing them, but then that is what sales and advertising are all about. For those who have trouble with this simple fact it is probably important to feel you are at least selling a product that you believe really does have a benefit for the buyer – let your conscience be your guide.

Understanding people becomes particularly important when using e-mails and social marketing. Here you are dealing more directly with individuals and I suggest, (without preaching), that for your own credibility you treat them as such.

It just comes down to the old golden rule of "Treat others as you would like to be treated." (Pin that up where you can see it – next to your internet marketing "My goal" post is a good place.)

If you go charging into people's threads on forums, groups and blogs waving your little sales banner around you are not going to win any popularity polls. Have a little respect and appreciate what their forum, group or blog is really for, believe it or not it's not for you to make a sale.

I sincerely believe that if you remember the people first, and treat them well, the numbers you want so much will follow and your internet marketing business will thrive.

This is the kind of reasoning that these companies rely on and one of the factors that make them so good at what they do. At this point I don't think it matters whether the service is helpful or not, the fact remains that they deceived you into signing up for it.

The moral of the story is that it pays to not only do your research but to make an effort to learn things on your own. Courses and programs are definitely helpful but these days you really have to research who you are doing business with especially when dealing with a Google Cash Kit offer.

A squeeze page isn't the best alternative as the website contact for a press release. Squeeze pages by definition don't have much information on them. Reporters are hesitant to sign up, and most of them won't. So even if they're interested in your press release you've lost the opportunity for a story.

Most squeeze pages have no contact information, or about us information. While you might want the url of your squeeze page included in your press release to generate visitors, it's highly unlikely the press will pick it up. It's considered too much of a sales pitch.

A landing page or sales page, in most cases will lose the interest of the media just as quickly as a squeeze page. They don't have time to wade through 10, 15, or 20 pages to determine if there's a story. In fact many of them will immediately click away when they realize where they've landed is a sales page.

So even if you have a webpage for your product, look at it through the eyes of the media. You've only got a few minutes to snag their interest. You need to provide them with concise nuggets of information that they can readily turn into a story. If you make their job easy, the more likely they are to feature your company in a story. You might consider setting up a separate site, or blog, for the media with links to your squeeze page and/or landing page for potential customers that happen to find their way there.

If you set up a blog make sure that the latest post is current and not from months ago. You can unleash the power of publicity by setting up an Internet presence.

Search engine optimisation

Here's what definitely works:

The very first thing you absolutely need to do is find your optimum keywords.

Do this by using Google's own keyword search tool or whatever tools you are familiar with. Spend some time on this subject as it's really important. Decide on one keyword only and three long tail keywords per page. No more is needed, seriously, too much and Google will slap you silly.

Embed your capture page with your optimum keyword three or four times only. Again don't overdo it. Embed your main keyword within your headline text. Embed your long tail keywords so that it's easily readable.

Submit your sites to all of the major search engines although this is not absolutely necessary nowadays.

Check in your webmaster tools that your sites are being "crawled" by Google and that your pages are Google friendly with as few html errors as possible. (press f12, verify)

Submit your links to as many social bookmarking sites as you can (this can take a fair amount of time without specific software).

Write a few articles on Digg and others and leave your url (signature) on your article pages, you don't need to be an expert, just get writing. Make money marketing.

Leave comments on authority blogs in your niche.

Sign up for as many social sites as you can. Set up your profile and customise it, be yourself.

Post to your blog as often as you can or at least 3 times per week and the traffic will eventually snowball.

How much is your site worth? Your site is worth as much as someone is willing to give you for it. Simple answer really. I know, that doesn’t help when you go out advertising a site for sale and everyone is asking how much you want for it and you don’t know what to say. You don’t want to undercut yourself especially after years of hard work, but then again, you are selling a website - virtual property - it just seems a little bit strange doesn’t it.

Your site is worth how much someone is willing to give you…

In my case my website operated in an industry and had a target market that would be hard to extract much more revenue beyond what I already was getting from advertising. Yes it certainly was possible, but it would take a new income stream to make significant gains. My website operated in a small niche that would not present me with a lot of buyers - but you won’t really know demand until you try and sell, of course.

I had a special personal consideration to think of as well. I didn’t want my site to go to just anybody, it had to go to someone that would look after it and keep the dream alive. I didn’t want some overseas buyer to absorb the site into their business and lose the great community that I had. The new owners had to share the passion I had when I first started and hopefully take the site to new heights.

(In the end though I would have taken anything if I exhausted all options to find good owners - I wanted to walk away with something for my hard work even if it meant the site would die a slow death under new management. Yes this might sound heartless, but I’m being honest and I didn’t really believe I would be forced to sell to a potentially bad owner.)

Preparing To Sell

The more information you can provide to potential buyers the better. Raw statistics are especially important to most buyers and if they don’t ask you for certain numbers then they don’t know what they are doing and are probably not really interested. You should prepare at least these figures:

Your website traffic statistics including unique visitors (averages and totals), pageviews (averages and totals), growth rates over time, which countries they are from, how much traffic comes from search engines and direct bookmarks, which keywords your site is popular for and the PageRank of your site. I made available direct access to my log files with a statistics package like Awstats or Webalizer so serious buyers could get a good grasp on my site’s performance.

You need a good sales spiel email letter introducing your website and you, your site’s history, why you want to sell your site, what your site offers to the new owner (current financial and future potential) and any other important factors. Don’t give away your asking price up front but certainly make note of the important factors, such as traffic figures and if your site is profitable.

Making The Sale

Eventually you should find someone interested in your site and the negotiation will begin. As with any negotiation the mindset and “state of urgency” of the buyer and seller play key roles in determining who has the upper hand. If the buyer is not desperate or the seller is then the power can rest in the buyers hands and she can dictate the terms and price. Of course it can be the other way around with the buyer very eager and the seller not so desperate, or any combination. Each case is different but as a seller remember to stick to your guns and don’t sell unless you are happy with the terms. No regrets.

When finalising the details of the sale I suggest you keep in mind these points:

1. How and when will the money be transferred? I suggest an upfront partial payment (we did 50%) and a final payment once the transfer has been made. Are you going to use cheque/check? Direct bank wire? Cash in hand?

2. Write up some form of formal contract with dates and agreed upon price and have all parties sign it. Of course if you are completing a big bucks deal then get yourself a lawyer to make sure you stay on top of the legal concerns.

3. Define how long you will provide support for. I chose to make myself available for a long time and even today I still help out occasionally. You might want to play it safe and document the mandatory period you must provide support.

4. Stay on top of all the technical little things. Web business is a complicated task and there are a lot of web tools that you might be using and have even forgot about. Don’t forget web hosting, domain names, autoresponders, mailing lists, software, subscriptions, paid directory listings and any of the host elements that might be used by your web business that you need to transfer to the new owners.

A Word on Top Level Domains (TLDs)

If you are targetting a specific country, then use the TLD for that country. Something ending in .uk for the UK, .de for Germany, .fr for France etc. The UK is unusual in that it offers a number of options, .co.uk being the most common. In our opinion, unless you are a not-for-profit organisation (in which case use .org.uk) this is the extension you should always use. The other extensions (.ltd.uk, .net.uk) are too rarely seen to be of much use to you.

We would also recommend staying away from .uk.com as this isn’t actually a true TLD. Instead it is some enterprising organisation who registered the domain name .uk.com a long time ago selling off sub-domain names of their domain name. You will find your options with regards transferring the domain name etc. restricted if you buy one of these, and probably pay a premium too because there is only one company selling these domains.

If you operate on a global platform, then .com is the domain name to use. Although you can register .info, .org, .net etc. these domains are again relatively unseen. If you do not use the .com and instead register mycompanyxyz.net, then there is the possibility of a domain squatter registering mycompanyxyz.com. You can guarantee that more people looking for your website are likely to type in .com than .net, and therefore you will lose customers.

A friend of mine, a web developer came up to me and asked if I have any idea on how to start a business online. I, a web designer, for one can not believe that I’m making a business of the internet much so that I got intrigued and excited about him making an effort to start an online business. He already has a very high salary, working as a head web developer of a very known company. So I already have an idea that my friend wouldn’t quit his job anytime soon. But I’m quite happy for him for making the effort of starting his own business and earn an income online.

He was my professor back in college, having the same passion for learning, he is very successful with his career and so am I on my chosen path. He asked me, “What’s the best blogging platform?” I said, “Wordpress, most blogs are wordpress.” He already have an idea on how to get started but really have no clue of the process of actually making money. I asked, “What’s cooking?” He said, “I went up looking at an entrepreneur magazine looking up for a business to start, then I realized I’m a web developer. There must be some way to make business out of it. Then I remembered you. You are the prof now. Can you help me?”

Of course I can. Here are some of the tips that I said to him.

* Blog about your passion if it’s profitable - Many people will say that, i.e. blog about your passion. Well it depends, you don’t want to starve, do you? You must take priority of your needs first so you can quit your job early. If you can blog about your passion and there’s a market for it, go for it. That’s 2 birds in 1 stone. Know if the topic is profitable first, then make a site around it. Personally, I’m a believer of delayed gratification. The first things we have to do when making a business online is to get paid and not starve. Blogging about my passion may give me the joy, but it’s useless to continue if I starve. What’s the point of doing business and quitting your job then if you can’t make a living about your passion?

* Invest in yourself - The reason why most people fail in business, especially making money online is that not many people are willing to sacrifice and spend some money to learn. Bloggers are known to be tech savvy and will do anything to get things for free. But real entrepreneurs know the value of knowledge so much that they are willing to spend time and money to attain it. I had an experience wasting 10,000 pesos trying to learn PPC. Did it really went to waste? No! I learned PPC a little bit and might take more money to get a grasp on it. But I’m willing to spend to educate myself.

* Stop reading make money online blogs - The best way to make money online is to go out there and try it yourself. Shed some money if you have to. That will be your foundation. Just stop reading make money online blogs. No offense to the make money online bloggers, I know it’s their passion to blog about making money. But being a newbie once in this field, make money online blogs didn’t really help. It’s better to read SEO blogs for SEO, affiliate marketing for making money as an affiliate or self improvement blogs for your business mentality. If I have found a good make money online blogs that teach people the truth and really make money, I would gladly advertise it on my site.

* Learn SEO - This is the bread and butter of online business. Learn real SEO from keyword research to promoting a site. Stop reading make money online blogs. Learn from the real experts in SEO, read SEOmoz, or ask at webmaster forums.

* Choose only 1 type of monetization - If you’re going for adsense, go for it and no more. Do not put competition on your page. There is the thing we call in business Diversification, this is true as to not put all your eggs in one basket. But it doesn’t mean put all banner ads or adsense on the page that you can fit. In reality, what it means is that, don’t put all your effort into 1 site. Putting a thousand of ads in your site will not only make your site look desperate, it will lack the credibility for affiliate offers and direct advertisers.

* Choose a niche - Blog about a specific niche. Do not blog about anything under the sun. If you’ll be monetizing the site with direct advertising, you know that these companies only want people that are viewing the ads that are related to their interest. Would you sell a guitar to a piano player? Having to blog anything without any specific topic will give advertisers the second thought of advertising with you. It’s because your viewers and traffic are junk that came from different sorts of life.

* Quit your job when you’re making twice as much online - This should have been my goal back then when I quit my job. It could’ve been a lot easier. It took me about 3 hard and sleepless months stumbling and starving to get my passive income as much as my day job and another 3 months to double it. Well it’s a good strategy to quit early though. For me, I had fun, if I didn’t make money within this certain period of month, I’m gonna fail my parents and die hungry.

Then you have the "Super AdSense" earners. We have all heard of them... the Elite few who are on track to make half a million dollars a year or more promoting AdSense sites.

Do not be mistaken though... these people are not building like your Mom and Pop's do. They have systems in place that create sites for them... people who build sites for them... they have outsourced and automated many of the tedious tasks such as posting to blogs and searching for keywords.

While most people cannot emulate everything these Super AdSense earners do... many of them you can.

Here are 7 Required Steps you can implement today to copy their success.

1) Starting today... treat your AdSense business like it is a REAL business and track what you do.

Begin tracking what you are doing that works... as well as what you are doing that does not work. This will keep you from making the same mistakes over and over, and you can repeat the steps that have worked in the past. As simple as this step seems... most people do not know the reason(s) to their success or failure.

2) Utilize the latest tools and software available.

The Super AdSense earners are not any smarter than your average person. I know many people think they are... but for the most part, they are regular non techie people.

7) Be consistent.

This is not one of those deals where you build one site and you are done. Refer back to Step #4. You must continuously build in order to be successful.

Think of it as planting a crop that you will harvest in a month or two, and the sites you build are seeds. Once the seeds have grown and matured... you will reap the harvest. The more seeds you plant... the larger the harvest.

Another way of achieving this effect if you do not want to include a navigation menu on every page is by including a link tree on every one of your inner pages. These are those links that you often find at the bottom of pages, and are again a very good way of interlinking your web pages. As before, be sure to include your main keyword(s) within each link.

I personally include a left-hand navigation menu on all of my websites, as well as a link tree at the bottom of each web page. This ensures not only that each page of each site has the maximum number of internal inward links, which boosts my pagerank and search engine rankings, but also ensures that the visitors to the site are always just one click away from each main page of the site. This is important if they enter at one of your inner pages, because often they will then want to navigate to the home page.

To conclude, to rank highly in the search engines, you should focus on on-page optimization, and more so off-page optimization. Just as every inward link to your site from another website acts as a vote for your site, and boosts your pagerank and search engine rankings, a link from another page within your site also acts as a vote and will also have a positive effect on your ranking. A good interlinking structure within your site will ensure that every page is fully optimized and has the optimum number of links from your other pages allowing you to rank higher for all of your inner pages as well as your home page.

Envelope Stuffing Scams Target the Elderly

One of the classic online scams is one that particularly targets older people, like Paid Surveys. This one has been around for years, even before the internet. It is particularly distasteful because it targets people who are not as sophisticated in the use of computers as younger people may be.

ENVELOPE STUFFING SCAMS
I fell for this scheme myself many years ago when I got out of college. At that time, these schemes were mostly advertised in print media. Often found in the classified ad sections in the back of glossy magazines or tabloids, they appeared to be a quick and easy way to make a reasonable extra income.

Now the scheme has moved onto the internet and it still gets thousands and thousands of people to respond. It seems an easier opportunity for people who are afraid to commit to an online business. The offer of $5 per envelope stuffed is not big, but most people think if you stuff enough, you can earn a decent extra income.

How does it work? No, you won't get hundreds of stamped envelopes from the company. No, you don't get hundreds of names on nicely addressed and stamped envelopes. What you get for the "fee" you paid to join this opportunity is a flimsy brochure and a letter instructing you how to place a small classified ad in newspapers and magazines. More aggressive companies encourage you to place ads online. These ads are placed at your cost.

The ad you place offers a person information if they will send a self addressed stamped envelope to you with $5 in it. You get the response with the $5 and you put the flyer from the company into the envelope and mail it. See, you're getting paid $5 for stuffing envelopes.

The truth is, how many people are going to send you $5 for information they could easily get elsewhere for free. Would you send someone $5 and a self addressed stamped envelope just to get some information? I don't think so.

When the scam moved online, the process got just a bit different. After you pay your "fee" you receive a package (sometimes) in the mail. It's not very big when it arrives. You think it might be just the instructions. It is just the instructions, and that is all you are going to get. What you are told to do is to advertise the very envelope stuffing business that you paid to join.

In order to generate the kind of response you would need to get the income you were promised, you will have to advertise heavily and consistently. That means both print and online ads. The cost of advertising online can be enormous. Most ads placed online require a minimum daily commitment. But unless you set the daily rate very high, the chance that anyone will ever see your ad is remote.

Remember, you are competing against the very people who hooked you in the first place. They are spending thousands of dollars a month to get their ads placed in the most favorable positions so that other people just like you will click on their ad and never even see yours.

The most unfortunate part is that these schemes continue to operate and offer bigger and bigger rewards. Just today I went online and searched for "Envelope Stuffing Jobs." The top three sites I found were from three different "opportunities" promising slightly different income possibilities.

One promised that you could earn $12 an hour. Another promised $50 to $75 dollars an hour and one even promised $1,576 a week stuffing envelopes at $5. That's 315 envelopes. In several cases the fee to join was almost $50.

One particularly dangerous aspect of some of these scams is that some of them invite you to join a special section of their business. To do this you must provide additional information. You may have already paid your fee to join, but they promise that if you want to make the really big money, you should join their elite members program. They promise you will make money faster and have extra support. The catch? You have to provide them with your bank account information or even your social security number. After all, you are going to be "working" for them and that means they need this information to send your tax information at the end of the year.

This is nothing more than another clever way to steal your identity. Never give your personal information to anyone who offers you the opportunity to join in an online business venture.

The envelope stuffing scams have become so pervasive that the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorneys General of several states have joined forces to both warn consumers and prosecute the people they can catch. To date, cases have been brought in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Indiana.

The problem is that it is difficult to find these individuals. They work from a computer with no physical facility. When too many complaints are lodged, either with an Attorney General or the Better Business Bureau, they simply change their name and go online as a new and better opportunity.

Stay away from these opportunities. You will NOT earn any money. If you should become a victim, report it to the Better Business Bureau, or your state's Attorney General Consumer Protection Department and the FTC.

What Do You Want To Communicate During Web Site Design

Okay, you're at the point where you know basically what your web site is about. You also understand your audience. Now it's time to figure out what you are trying to tell your audience. What message or messages are you attempting to deliver?

What I usually do at this stage of the game is get a blank pad of paper and a good pen, go to the park (assuming it's a nice day) or someplace quiet and think. Another good place is the local library, although the office conference room will do in a pinch.

The idea is to stay away from a computer. You don't want to have any temptations near you at all. No terminals, no keyboards, no internet access, no email. Nothing. Why not? Because this stage of the game has nothing to do with the internet or computers. I've also found it's much easier to think without distractions like a ringing phone or a demanding email program.

So think about what you are trying to communicate. This is probably one of the most important parts of the design process. Do it right at the beginning and your web site will just come together by itself. Mess it up now, and you may find yourself making endless changes and fighting it for a long period of time.

I've found it's best to start from general terms (this is referred to top-down design) and work my way to the specifics. For example, let's say I have decided to make a web site about domestic cats and my audience is cat owners. All right, what am I trying to tell these cat owners?

I might begin by saying, well, I want to teach them some of the tricks that I have learned to make cat ownership more fun and fulfilling. I might also want to sell them some products (that is a form of communication) as well. In addition, I may want to stress ethical treatment of animals.

Now I can start putting this together in an outline or list or whatever you like. This is a thinking process, so just write down whatever you feel is important in as organized a manner as is appropriate. What you are doing is trying to get your thoughts organized and written down - this is nothing formal and it definitely does not need to be seen by anyone else. Formal design comes later, this is more of a high level analysis.

I might wind up with a list of things to teach my visitors about cats. The idea here is to give people some information which makes the site valuable for them. This is important regardless of whether or not the site is commercial - you must give people something of value or they will not remain at your site, they will not come back and they will not recommend to anyone else.

You may also start to consider briefly how you are going to communicate your messages. Think a little bit about graphics, sounds and other multimedia at this point. Staying with the cat example, I might want to include a chart of cat breeds with a picture of each breed, along with a description and favorite food. I may also want to include video or sounds to communicate better. Remember, you are not creating the web site or it's contents at this time - you are defining the boundaries.

Define the limits to what you want to discuss on your site. Current information? Daily or weekly tips (perhaps an ezine)? Historical data? Photo albums? How detailed do you want to get? How general? If you are selling something, how are you going to tie your content to your site?

Remember to always tie back your decisions to your goals and to your audience. Are these things that your audience would want to know? Does all of this information fit in with the site goals and objectives? In other words, if you are creating a web site about cats, you probably do not want to include articles and pictures from your skiing trip - unless, of course, you have a cat that skis.

Write down your thoughts and organize them as necessary. Then go home and come back the next day. Repeat the process. Do this as often as necessary until it just feels like it's done. I've found it's usually good to do this several times over several days.

Don't spend an outrageous amount of time on any of this. The whole process for a good sized web site should only take a few afternoons. Remember, you are defining in general what you are communicating. The specifics come later.

When you are finished, you will find that the remainder of the web site analysis and design process will go much smoother. And it should - you know what you are trying to communicate. That sure makes it easier to do so.

Consistency in article output means writing articles on a regular basis. It means writing them, to keep your name and links distributed on the web, even when you don't feel like writing them. They do not want sales talk, or basic information that they already know. They want detailed information that enlightens and teaches them. Readers know quality when they see it.

They also know when they're being given a raw deal so-to-speak. When they read fluff, they get cranky because they know they have just spent their time to no gain. They gained no new knowledge, and received no solutions to their problems. They will not seek your articles again, or link back to your website for more information.

Why is that? The reason is that you are not a credible information supplier to them. You have not connected to them with your content. When you do not provide quality information, consistently, you lose your readers to someone else who does. That's why your article content has to be of high quality. You want readers linking back to your website, where your affiliate products are, for even more information.

Consistency as a trustworthy updater of information means getting your readers the latest news, data, and views on your area of expertise. This is different from being a consistent provider of quality articles in the sense that you go beyond basic quality.

In other words, you can provide articles full of quality content that will always help your reader concerning a subject. This is quality information that is not time-sensitive. Some products and subject areas have detailed information that is always relevant. Readers new to a subject will always need this type of content. You should write great articles to meet their needs.

However, you need others to see you as someone they can trust to keep them "in the know" about new issues concerning your subject area and products that relate to it. When your readers can trust that you will always have fresh content that speaks to them of innovations, findings, and new directions concerning the subject they're interested in, then you have a reader for life. This is where you are a trustworthy updater on top of a quality content provider. You are always giving readers new information.

Consistency in the above three areas is something you can control in your article marketing program. You are responsible for regular output. You are responsible for quality content. You are responsible for updating that content as often as needed. You control all these things and need to continue to do it to grow your affiliate business.

You’ve got your internet business and you have created an opt-in list. Now what?

Well, you have to encourage your list to buy from you. This is a lot harder than you may first imagine. There are series of books written on this subject and it really is an art. Many people have studied for years to perfect this, however I’m going to go through some very important rules to follow when you start selling to your list. Email is the preferred method to contact your list as it’s free and very effective.

Always remember the vast majority of people base their decision to buy on EMOTION. They then justify their purchase through LOGIC.

When selling to your list you must address both these factors in order to maximise the sales from your list. Over the last five years I have been involved in various internet businesses and I have found the following rules to be most effective.

Get your customers begging for more information:

You have to grab the attention of your list, you must create enough interest so that your list is begging for more information on your products.

Carry out some market research for yourself, register with various companies and see how they sell, see how they make their products "sizzle", this is sometimes referred to as "selling the sizzle" and can be very effective.

There are many ways to present your products and many promotional styles and methods. You have to grab your customers attention and get them to visit your site for more information and therefore buy your product. Content and creativity are the keys here, you are trying to lock in your customer to your marketing and therefore your products.

a) Keep your message simple, light and creative. Your customer does not want a long winded email with loads of facts and figure about your products and their performance. Keep it light hearted, your objective is to get your customer to read the email. We all live in a serious world, add a bit of humour or fun and it can pay off.

b) Add photos and splash some colour into your emails. Send out newsletters previewing your products, make them interesting, light hearted and eye catching. Grab your customers interest.

c) You must have good content and articles about your products. This will build trust between you and your customers. If necessary get a professional copy writer to do this for you in a style that is informative and light hearted, not stuffy. Outline the benefits of your products to your customers, do not talk about features, only benefits. Try not to be too keen here, people don’t like products being forced upon them, hold back a little, this often works.

d) A picture is worth a thousand words. If you do have clear and concise pictures of your products then use them! This coupled with clear concise benefits can work wonders.

Grab Your Readers Attention With Your Subject:

This is sometimes overlooked by new internet business owners. They don’t realise that just sending an email is not enough. In this day and age there are literally thousands of companies who market their products through opt-in lists via email. You have to realise that you are just one of the many companies vying for your customers attention.

Therefore it is imperative that you actually get your customer to open your email. To some this may sound rather a basic point. But do you realise that on average every 100 emails sent to an opt-in list, the average number of emails that are actually read is approx 30-40.

THE major factor in your customer opening your email is the subject heading in your email, that is why it is so important to get this right.

a) Try and keep the subject short and concise, it should ideally provide a summary of the content of your email. You need to grab the attention of your customer so that they are intrigued to open your email and read further. Tickle your customers curiosity, use emotion and selling words. Remember you only have a few seconds to grab your customers attention before they skip or delete your email.

b) A popular method is to indicate that your email will give your customer some sort of training or tips on certain subjects. You can do this by using phrases such as "Guide To ..." or "How To ..." or "Tips for ...". These are known to work well but your email content must reflect your subject heading.

c) Asking a question in the subject heading can also work well. Again you have to get emotional buy in, even from the subject heading. So questions like "Are you looking for financial freedom?" or "Have you had enough of working for someone?". These types of subject heading get your customers thinking straight away and are known to work well. Again always ensure your email content gives an answer to the question stated in the subject of your email.

d) New product announcements. This is perfect when previewing new products you are about to launch or make available to your customers. Headings like "Announcing great new ..." or "2 weeks before launch of ...". Again can be very effective given the product you are selling.

e) Issuing a command or directive. Statements such as "Act now ..." or "Limited opportunity apply now ..." or "Triple your income, find out how ...". Again you are emphasising the benefits of your products to your customers.

Things To Avoid When Emailing Your List:

Online and email marketing is very common and your customers will be bombarded with many internet companies vying for their money. It is important for you to avoid getting into problems with the law or your ISP or with spamming. However, if you have created your own opt-in list then you should be o.k. and not have to worry from these problems. However there are still some things to avoid.

Remember it can takes years to gain a good reputation and only a few minutes to destroy it.

a) Analyse your email broadcasts, take note of those that bounce, i.e. that are undeliverable. Also get some information on how many were opened. Erase all bounced email addresses. Some autoresponders such as Aweber do this for you. Manually check the email address for common mistakes, it may be that it is a simple spelling mistake which you can correct.

b) Always but always provide an unsubscribe option at the bottom of your emails. Aweber automatically does this as do most autoresponders. It may be that someone used another person’s email address so you need to give them an easy option to stop receiving your emails.

c) Do not send shocking or disturbing pictures or video, absolutely no pornographic content should be sent. You cannot be certain of the age of the person who has opted in to your list, therefore always keep your content respectable and above board. Always stick to the content of your site or your products.

Follow the above golden rules and you should be successful at marketing your products to your list and getting a favourable response. Remember, cultivating the relationship between yourself and your customers is key in establishing trust and thereby getting your customers to purchase from you.

You have to be living in a cave to not have heard of eBay. EBay calls itself the world’s marketplace, but I like to think of it as the largest garage sale in the world. Let’s call it a cyber garage sale. It is better than ordinary garage sales because you spend a whole lot less time and frustration looking at stuff you have no interest in. Speaking of garage sales, I have a friend who still frequents them, and she meets quite a few people at sales that mention to her that they are interested in eBay, but they still have not gotten around to buying or selling on eBay.

I understand that completely. For a long time, I browsed eBay, agog at the prices, but I just did not understand it, so I bought nothing. Then I had a friend who let me look over her shoulder as she showed me around on the eBay site and explained the basics of buying and selling. Even without the listings of things for sale, eBay is a huge website. There are pages upon pages of policies, rules, helpful resources for buyers, resources for sellers, and much more. In short it can take a long time to read and even longer to take action to buy or sell something for the very first time. That is why having a helpful friend with eBay experience is of great benefit.

What made me comfortable with buying on eBay was seeing the different screens on eBay (search, product description, seller’s feedback, etc.) and having my friend point out what was important. Sometimes what was important was information that was missing, such as the words “new” or “smoke-free.”

Once I understood how to find what I was searching for and once I understood about auctions and fixed price listings, I still needed to understand how to assess a seller’s feedback. Eighty percent may be an acceptable grade in school, but on eBay it is abysmal. As an eBay seller, my friend cared a great deal about her one-hundred percent positive feedback and keeping her customers happy, and I could see that. I gained an appreciation for what it means to be an eBay seller with several hundred feedbacks and a one-hundred percent score.

Not only did I get comfortable with eBay, I also started having fun. Recently I purchased a couple of new clothing items for less than half the price of one and that includes the shipping. What is more fun to a shopper than picking up some real bargains?
